Status asthmaticus in children: a one-year study.

چکیده
50 children were admitted on 72 occasions during one year in status asthmaticus, defined as wheezing not relieved by two doses of bronchodilator 4 hours apart. At least one-third of children were hypercapnoeic on admission. They were managed with either oral prednisolone and nebulised salbutamol. Those with peak expiratory flow rates of greater than 25% expected for height were satisfactorily managed on the oral regimen. One child needed assisted ventilation. 73% were fit for discharge within 4 days and more than half of them needed a change in maintanance treatment.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support in a Patient with Status Asthmaticus
Status asthmaticus is a rare, fatal condition, especially in children. Sometimes respiratory support is insufficient with a mechanical ventilator or medical therapy for patients with status asthmaticus. In such situations, early extracorporeal membrane oxygenation application is a useful method for treating refractory respiratory failure. We report on a case of a six-year-old, male child who un...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the quality of available evidence to establish guidelines for the use of noninvasive ventilation for the management of status asthmaticus in children unresponsive to standard treatment. METHODS Search, selection and analysis of all original articles on asthma and noninvasive ventilation in children, published until September 1, 2014 in all languages in the electronic dat...
متن کاملHospitalization rate and 30-day mortality among patients with status asthmaticus in Denmark: a 16-year nationwide population-based cohort study
OBJECTIVE Current data on hospitalization and prognosis of acute asthma and status asthmaticus are inconclusive. We aim to analyze the rate of first-time hospitalizations for status asthmaticus among patients of all ages, the proportion admitted to intensive care units (ICU), and the 30-day mortality over a 16-year period. METHODS In this population-based cohort study, we used medical registr...
متن کامل[Controlled ventilation in the treatment of status asthmaticus in children].
ASTHMA IS DEFINED as intermittent spells of bronchospasm with symptom-free periods in a child who has a history or family history of an allergic condition. When the bronchospasm does not respond to bronchodilator treatment, or when extensive plugging of the bronchioles with sticky opalescent mucus occurs, the child is in status asthmaticus. 1 Although the large majority of children admitted to ...
متن کاملPressure-controlled ventilation in children with severe status asthmaticus.
OBJECTIVE The optimum strategy for mechanical ventilation in a child with status asthmaticus is not established. Volume-controlled ventilation continues to be the traditional approach in such children. Pressure-controlled ventilation may be theoretically more advantageous in allowing for more uniform ventilation. We describe our experience with pressure-controlled ventilation in children with s...
